An exciting new look is coming to both the main
floor and basement levels of the Library.
The main floor lounge is one of the most popular
spots in the Library. To create additional lounge areas for
students, a crew from Physical Plant will move the existing
lounge chairs and sofas to the basement to create a second
lounge.
Moving the existing lounge furniture downstairs
provides the opportunity to renovate the main floor lounge.
After consulting with a group of students
(Andrea Christian, Katie Lobb, Lauren Perotti, John Ramsey,
Melanie Scriptunas, and Amy Williams) about the possibility of
redesigning the main floor lounge and adding all new
furnishings, Charles Jamison, Library Director, met with
Dean Judith Levy and Fred Klee, Physical Plant Director,
to discuss the project.
The student "consultants" then helped develop a
plan to purchase the new furniture from IKEA. The new chairs and
tables that were selected are similar to the four IKEA chairs
that were placed near the "New Books" shelves this semester that
have become so popular with students.
In all, 30 new chairs will extend the seating
capacity of lounges in the Library, bringing the total to 50
throughout the entire building.
Special thanks go to Dean Levy, Win Guilmette
and Fred Klee for supporting this project, the students who
assisted with the selection of the furniture, the library
student assistants who helped assemble the furniture, and Mike
Birmingham from Physical Plant who greatly assisted with the
project.
To celebrate these new areas for studying,
meeting, and relaxing, the Library will hold an Open House on
Friday, November 7 at 3:00-4:00 PM. Please join the Myrin Staff
to enjoy the new furnishings and also check out the most recent
additions to the Myrin Library student art collection, which
were recently installed in the main floor lounge.
Refreshments will be served at 3:00 p.m. and all
are cordially invited! |
