- Historical Background
- "Moments in Time: Celebrating the 125th
Anniversary of the Founding of Ursinus College" was the title of
an exhibit that opened on May 25th, 1994, at the Philip and Muriel
Berman Museum of Art. The exhibit held in the Upper Gallery lasted
until September 11, 1994. The exhibition, funded by the Ursinus
College Class of 1939, held its opening reception on Friday June 3,
1994. Nancy Fago was the curator.
- Scope and Content
- This collection consists of photographic reprints
and descriptions of prominent Alumni who graduated from Ursinus
College between the years of 1923-1986. Alumni photos are dated with
the year of graduation. Photographic reprints of college residence
halls and academic buildings, both past and present are also included.
These photos are not dated. There are 2 boxes (1 linear foot) of
mounted photos and descriptions. There are 20 photos, 13 of alumni and
7 of college residence halls and academic buildings.
- Organization
- The collection is arranged into two series. Each is
arranged alphabetically within the series.

Series Descriptions
- Series I. Alumni Photos.
- Thirteen Ursinus Alumni were highlighted,
seven men and six women. Those alumni were: Joan Deaver Aikens, '50, a
federal election commissioner; Joseph DeSimone, '86, an assistant
professor in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina who has
been honored by President Clinton for his research and teaching
accomplishments; Hermann F. Eilts, '43, an ambassador to Saudia Arabia
and Egypt; Loretta Podolak Finnegan, '60, a world renowned expert in
the field of neonatal addiction; Cynthia Fisher, '83, founder and
president of Viacord, Inc.; Clarence S. Livingood, '32, established
the field of dermapathology; Lola S. Reed, '38, president of the
Phoenixville Medical Staff; Ismar Schorsch, '57, chancellor and
professor of Jewish History at the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America; James Scott, '53, director of NASA's Magellan Mission to
Venus; Murray Silverstein, '50, a hemotologist with the Mayo Clinic;
James R. Stellar, '72, in 1985, received the Outstanding Harvard
University of the Year Award; Linda Grace Hoyer Updike, '23, mother of
novelist John Updike and an accomplished writer and Judith Yaskin,
'63, a one-time Superior Court Judge in New Jersey and also its first
Assistant Attorney General.

- Series II. College Residence Halls and Academic Buildings photos
and descriptions.
- Seven college properties are included in this
series. Brodbeck and Curtis, two identical dormitories built for men
in 1927; Clamer Hall, originally leased as a girls dormitory and given
to the college in 1953; Fircroft, leased to the college in 1926 as a
dormitory and then donated to the college in 1942; Freeland, Derr and
Stine Halls, the main building of Freeland Seminary that later served
as classrooms, library, dormitories, and dining facilities for Ursinus
College; Glenwood Hall, leased as a women's dormitory in 1922;
Highland Hall, purchased as a men's dormitory in 1924 and later turned
into training headquarters for athletes; Hobson House, purchased in
1906 by the college.
